Recoleta: Two Hundred Years Of Solitude *Picture Special*

People are dying to get into this place...
Yesterday afternoon was the big one for me in Buenos Aires - the Recoleta Cemetery, last resting place of hero/villain Evita Peron and of the great, good, bad, famous, rich and powerful of Argentina's past two centuries.

Oh! What A Circus
The place is vast, like a town in itself (ie a necropolis!). It felt like walking down a surreal high street with shop fronts and signs advertising the wares within.

There was some fascinating and fantastical design and craftsmanship - creepy Gothic, grand Neo-Classical, lots of Nouveau, twisting around crumbling stonework, and lots of stylish Deco typefaces.

Hundreds of  regal angels, smug cherubs, weeping shades and damned children, long-suffering Christs and Madonnas looked down from every angle and it was easy to lose a few hours wandering through the avenues and parades...

(Oh, by the way, if you click on any picture you`ll get a better gallery view)

One of two Nobles. Disappointingly modern, they both looked like ticket offices.

Life imitating art.
These two haven`t spoken for over 100 years - she still won`t tell the poor sod what he`s done wrong.

  1. Gotta love a good Cemetery, and this looks like one of the world's finest, great pics Keith. I sent Jan the link to your blog btw, so he'll doubtless be affronted at your caption.

  2. I should hope so. Would be good to hear a bit of banter from him.
