Day Of The Dead Big

Our second Buenos Aires walking tour took us around the posher parts of town - stylish shops, apartment blocks, a skyscraper and several town houses, one of which Rod, Mick, Madonna and... our good friend Robbie F Williams stop at when in town.

Oh, too good for stopping in a hostel are you, Williams?

It was only after our guide (Mariano again) pointed it out did I realise what was not quite right about BA`s Euro-tribute - it is all hugely out of scale, eg where Paris would be content with a four-storey apartment block, Buenos Aires goes with eight. Once you spot it, you notice how much bigger and wider everything is.

Falklands War memorial

On the Falklands War, Mariano was particularly diplomatic in blaming the failing Galtieri`s junta for a bad political move. The war memorial faces a large, distant clocktower donated by Britain in the 19th century and dubbed "Big Ben". The ironic positioning was noted, if not understood.

Finishing at the Recoleta, we found the area grand but soulless after the delights of our own neighbourhood.

Old and new combine

The local synagogue

A big church that looks like the space shuttle

Almost hidden from view...

Built in the 30s to hide the church from view, this skyscraper was an apparent act of architectural revenge by a slighted rich woman.
Even the trees are big

San Martin - the man who started it all

Finishing the walk at a lovely picnic spot...

    1. I fancied having our picnic in there but think it would have been frowned upon.
