A large walled city on the Caribbean coast, Cartagena was a picturesque delight.
We stayed at the San Roque hotel in the slightly rough Getsemani district and spent three lovely hot days wandering the streets, lanes and squares, and walking around the battlements and catacombs of the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, put there in the 17th century to safeguard the Spaniards' golden loot.
We had a nice Indonesian meal, drinks on the square and lots of ice cream, but suffered a cashpoint scare (¨Now take your cash¨ Oops, no cash came out!) a power cut, so we couldn't buy our airline tickets, and it took the hotel three panicky days to open the safe with my passport in it, after I had forgotten the combination...

With all issues solved, we hailed a cab to the airport for a flight downcountry to Medellin...
